Anne Lister References
An ever-growing list of references about Anne Lister
Researching Anne Lister takes you places. Sometimes those places are hard to get to.
The goal of this list is to provide direct access to as many relevant resources as possible and to provide information about how to obtain those that are harder to access. Books, book chapters and academic works are included, as well as less frequently cited references such as historical and social research and other works relevant to researching Anne Lister. While we hope to be comprehensive, more works continue to emerge so please recommend references for inclusion.
Primary sources such as historical documents held in various archives (such as her journals and letters) are not included individually as this would make this list unwieldy, plus a lot of context is necessary to explain their relevance. For information about how these resources are collected, citations and research notes see the note at the end of this page.
Note: If you are new to researching Anne Lister, consider starting with the The Book Concierge instead.
💡To find specific items use your browser's Find option
All references are listed alphabetically by title and include authors, publication date and type of work, as well as known availability information (open, paid or restricted access), linking to a source where the reference can be found. When multiple options were present, we favored the open, non-commercial option.

About the list, citations and research notes
This compilation began as a short bibliography listing the citations from the many books about Anne Lister as they were being read by contributors to this site (as early as June 2019), and grew as we began to explore more of the background and context around Anne Lister's life.
As with all research about Anne Lister, over time, the various topics that emerged began to generate additional interesting and relevant references and so the list grew. We created a database for keeping track of what the references were and who had them so we could consult each other when needing additional information.
Making this available to anyone is consistent with the purpose of this site—to uncover and understand Anne Lister's life and historical context and doing so openly, collaboratively and providing access to all. As long as there is interest, we hope to maintain the list and continue to add to it as new works are published.
If you would like to recommend a reference for inclusion, please get in touch.
This page was optimized for legibility and findability so people interested in learning about Anne Lister can more easily surface and access these references, which often demand extensive googling and access issues. Individuals conducting formal research also have all the necessary information here to transform each reference into the suitable citation format of their preference.
If you are new to accessing academic references like the journal articles linked here, your university or local library will likely offer you free access to at least portions of these databases, so you may be able to access some of the paid titles without incurring any costs. Talk to a librarian! 💛
